Outer Banks Bass Fishing

April 28, 2014

I took off today by myself to have fun and do a little frog fishing.  The water temps started at 62 degrees, still a little behind normal for late April.  I caught a few strikes on tape with the Gopro and if you look close in one section you will see a deer feeding on the bank.  It's kind of hard to see.

Judd and I had a full day fishing on North River.  The water temp started at 59 degrees and rose to the mid 60's by the end of the day.  The wind was calm in the morning, but 25+ in the afternoon.  We had a great day fishing with around 35 fish total for the day.  Action was steady all day.

Enjoyed a full day trip with Gary from Virginia.  The water was as low as I have seen it in a non-hurricane situation.  The wind had been blowing out the northeast hard for a week and we had trouble getting out of the canal that leaves the boat ramp.  The water temp started at a cold 53 degrees and got to 60 degrees by days end.  It was one of those days that you really had to work for the fish.  We still caught around 10 fish and saw a bear for the second trip in a row.  Thanks Gary, I enjoyed your company all day!

Today I had a full day trip with Bill and his son Will from Virginia.  I fished with Bill last year and this year his son joined us for the trip.  The day was cold and very windy with wind out of the northeast 15 - 25 mph.  The water temps had also fallen 10 degrees from a few days ago and started at 56 degrees.  We still caught some nice fish and Will caught his first Bowfin.  While we were fishing I heard Bill say "Is that a bear up that tree" and it was a very large black bear way up a big old tree.  You can see pictures below.  Thanks Bill and Will for a great and very cold day on the water!!

Lisa and I took a trip to North River to scout around for an up coming trip.  The water is steadily warming and started in the low 60's.  By days we did find one pocket with 68 degree water and the frog bite was on.  We caught about 20 fish, most bucks but Lisa did catch a nice fish on a Bad Bluegill crankbait.  You can see this bait at www.backwatercustomcranks.com

Went to North River hoping to see the water temps starting to rise a little.  The temp was 55 degrees in the morning and warmed to the low 60's by days end.  Caught about 15 fish but most were still the males up shallow.  I caught right many in the morning on a Backwater Custom Cranks square bill 1.5 in the Yellow Perch color.  You can see the bait at www.backwatercustomcranks.com  Here are a few pictures of the better fish caught today and a nice white perch!

Here is the Yellow Perch crank.  The North River has a huge yellow perch spawn every February and I have had good luck with this pattern in the early spring.
